The Long Piece

The beach is a place where mass choreography is always already happening, to be watched and to be experienced. For Dansand! a mass choreography will be created within the bigness of this scenery, following the duration of the tides.

A group of 60 volunteers create a piece during a short workshop, directed by Christine De Smedt and Mette Edvardsen, assisted by Lies Vanborm and Lilia Mestre. The choreography unfolds during six hours along the entire beach of Oostende. The 60 performers migrate on the beach, measuring space and time, build sand constructions, appear and disappear as a group, create walking patterns, construct landscapes, play with distance, zooming in and out along the horizon. The audience is invited to watch the performance from close or far, to leave and to come back, to join a pick-nick, to take a rest in the sand, to change perspectives, to go for a swim, to look from the other side.

The performance starts at 13:00 with low tide in front of the festival centre, moves over 6 hours along the beach and ends with high tide at 19:00. More details about where the performance takes place at what time will be announced at the festival centre. Bring binoculars!
